Managing the Hypervisor
You manage an Edge server from its hypervisor detail page in the Console. The status header shows the hypervisor as Online or Offline, polled roughly every 10 seconds. Offline means the Console cannot currently reach the server, not that its VMs are down; check its power and network connection before assuming a fault.
Renaming
Rename the hypervisor from the Identification card on its Settings tab: edit the Hypervisor Name (required) or the optional Hypervisor Description and select Submit. Renaming is cosmetic and safe at any time; it changes how the server is labeled, not its address, Storage Pool, or VMs.
Power
Reboot and Shutdown are on the Power Control card of the Actions tab, available only while the host is online. Rebooting brings the host back up on its own; after a shutdown the host stays off until you start it out of band, from the power button or its baseboard management controller (IPMI, iLO, or iDRAC), because the Console cannot power a host on.
Both dialogs ask how running virtual machines are handled before the host goes down:
- Running Virtual Machine Action: Pause (the default) preserves each VM's memory state so it resumes when the host returns; Shutdown gracefully shuts each guest down; Halt stops every VM immediately.
- Virtual Machine Timeout: how long Edge waits, in seconds (default
600), for VMs to reach the requested state before proceeding. - Halt on Timeout: off, the power action is canceled if VMs do not finish in time, leaving the host running; on, any VMs still running when the timeout expires are forcefully halted and the power action continues.
Halting a VM, whether directly or through Halt on Timeout, stops it without letting the guest close cleanly and risks data loss. Reserve it for machines that do not respond to a graceful shutdown.
Updating
When a new host OS version is available, an update banner appears on the server's Dashboard. Select Update and confirm; the dialog names the version that will be applied. Updating is disruptive: all VMs are paused, the host reboots, and the VMs resume once the update completes, so plan a maintenance window.
The Information tab reports the version state at any time: Current Version, Available Version, and Update Required.
Archiving
Archiving is the single removal path for a server you are retiring: it marks the hypervisor inactive and hides it from the Console. Nothing on the server or its Storage Pool is wiped, and an archived hypervisor reappears in the Console on its own if the machine is rebooted, so archiving is reversible.
From the Actions tab, select Archive on the Archive card and confirm. If you are permanently retiring the hardware, migrate or export any data you still need first.
