Hardware Profile Support in Edge

October 6, 2026

Edge virtual machines now use hardware profiles, the named presets of virtual hardware that Standalone and Cluster already use. A profile gives you control over the firmware and device types a guest sees.

More Control Over Virtual Hardware

Until now, Edge set a virtual machine’s low-level hardware at creation. A hardware profile allows updates to that configuration whilst maintaining simplicity. The profile sets the firmware, Secure Boot keys, the disk, optical drive, and network adapter types, the CPU features the guest can see, and the enlightenments a Windows guest uses to run well.

One Model Across Edge, Standalone, and Cluster

A profile on Edge is the same profile, with the same settings, as on Standalone and Cluster. Templates maintain compatibility with all hypervisor types.

Gallium never edits a published profile version. When the recommended settings change, a new version is published alongside the old one. A virtual machine keeps the hardware it has until you update it to a newer version.

Your Existing Virtual Machines

Virtual machines created before this change show Legacy / Custom in place of a profile name. For the best performance we recommend you update your virtual machines to use a hardware profile.
